SafePanaeolina foenisecii is generally considered non-toxic, but it is not edible due to its small size and lack of culinary value. There have been reports of mild gastrointestinal upset in some individuals who have consumed it, possibly due to individual sensitivity or misidentification. Crucially, it is often mistaken for psychoactive species of Panaeolus and Psilocybe, which contain psilocybin and psilocin. Therefore, consumption is strongly discouraged.
Toxin Type: None known to be consistently present in psychoactive concentrations. Some reports suggest trace amounts of serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, but not psilocybin or psilocin.Reaction Type: Gastrointestinal upset (rarely reported), potential for misidentification leading to consumption of psychoactive or toxic look-alikes.
Don't confuse with these look-alikes
Misidentification is the most common cause of mushroom poisoning. Brown Haycap can be confused with:
- Panaeolus cinctulus — mushroom
- Panaeolus olivaceus — mushroom
- Panaeolus papilionaceus — mushroom
- Psilocybe semilanceata — mushroom
- Galerina marginata — mushroom
