The tubes are 0.5–1.2 cm (0.2–0.5 in) long, and are adnate to depressed around the stem. The flesh is yellow, but stains blue quickly when cut or bruised. This bluing reaction is especially noticeable in young fruit bodies. The stem is 3–9 cm (1.2–3.5 in) long by 0.6–1.2 cm (0.2–0.5 in) thick, and is nearly equal in width throughout its length. It is dry, and has a velvety texture. The stem color is red to blood red in the lower portion, but becomes more orange to yellow near the top. The stem surface is covered with a fine network of reticulations that are the same color as the stem.
