Description

Amanita verna, commonly known as the Fool's Mushroom or Destroying Angel, is a deadly poisonous basidiomycete fungus, one of many in the genus Amanita. It occurs in Europe in spring and summer. It is all-white, and fruiting bodies appear in broadleaf woodland. All parts of Amanita verna are poisonous.

How to Identify

Cap
The cap is typically 5–10 cm (2–4 in) in diameter, initially convex, becoming flatter with age. The surface is smooth and can be slightly sticky when moist. The color is pure white.
Gills
The gills are free, crowded, and white. They do not attach to the stem.
Stem
The stem is slender, 8–14 cm (3–5.5 in) tall and 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) thick, with a ring (annulus) near the top. The stem is white and smooth.
Flesh
The flesh is white and does not change color when cut or bruised.
Fruiting body
The fruiting body of Amanita verna is entirely white, including the gills and stem. It has a cap that is initially convex, becoming flatter with age, typically 5–10 cm (2–4 in) in diameter. The cap surface is smooth and can be slightly sticky when moist. The stem is slender, 8–14 cm (3–5.5 in) tall and 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) thick, with a ring (annulus) near the top. At the base, there is a volva, a cup-like structure that is a remnant of the universal veil that encloses the mushroom when young.
Habitat
Amanita verna is found in broadleaf woodlands, typically in spring and summer. It is often associated with oak and beech trees.
