Helvella lacunosa contains monomethylhydrazine (MMH), a toxic compound also found in Gyromitra esculenta (False Morel). While the concentration of toxin is generally lower than in Gyromitra, proper cooking is essential to reduce the risk of poisoning. Symptoms can include gastrointestinal distress (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), neurological effects (dizziness, headache), and, in severe cases, liver damage. Thorough cooking and/or drying (which also degrades the toxin) are necessary to render it safer for consumption, but caution is always advised.
