תיאור

Amanita ocreata is a deadly poisonous basidiomycete fungus in the genus Amanita, native to western North America, and associated with oak woodlands. A white mushroom, it is one of the most toxic of all known fungi. The symptoms of poisoning are similar to those of Amanita phalloides, the death cap, with initial gastrointestinal upset followed by a period of apparent recovery, then by severe liver damage and possibly death; for this reason, it is placed in the section Phalloideae of the genus Amanita. It possesses a cap that is typically white but can be ochraceous to brownish in the center.

The cap is typically 5–12 cm (2–4.5 in) in diameter, oval to convex at first, becoming more flattened with age. The color is usually white, but may have a cream or ochraceous tint, especially in the center. The surface is smooth and can be slightly sticky when moist. The margin of the cap is smooth and lacks striations.

The gills are free, crowded, and white. They do not attach to the stalk. Short gills (lamellulae) are present and interspersed among the full-length gills.
